History

Yorktown’s Chapter (1264) of the Tri-M Music Honor Society was established in 1972. After a brief hiatus, the chapter was re-established in 2012 with a single question guiding our purpose. How can we enhance participation in, knowledge of, and goodwill toward the Yorktown music program?

Past Events Have Included:

  • Friday Morning Music: Weekly concerts showcasing various music department ensembles. Concerts take place before school begins in Yorktown’s Grand Hall, and are accompanied by bake sales.
  • Letter Writing Campaign: Members write letters reaching out to current 8th grade students to share their high school music experiences and invite students to a side-by-side evening rehearsal hosted at Yorktown High School.
  • Winter Middle School Rehearsal: The Yorktown Band hosts a side-by-side evening rehearsal hosted at Yorktown High School, and Tri-M members host a question and answer period with 8th graders.
  • Nottingham Halloween Parade: Members of the Yorktown Band lead (in costume) the students of Nottingham Elementary on a parade around their block.
  • Westover Farmers Market: Members of the Yorktown Band perform at Westover Farmer’s Market in an effort to publicize the upcoming Band Day Fundraiser.
  • Junior Honors Auditions: Members of the Yorktown Music Program help with the audition process for elementary or middle school Arlington County students.
  • Concert Ushers/Event Volunteers: Members of the Tri-M Music Honor Society help to coordinate volunteers and ushers for school concerts and festivals, including pyramid concerts, Junior Honor Band Auditions, and the Essentially Ellington Regional High School Jazz Band Festival.
  • Instrument Demonstrations: Tri-M members coordinate times for members of Yorktown Ensembles to travel to Arlington County Elementary Schools to demonstrate their instruments for elementary school students interested in learning an instrument.
  • Music Sectionals: Tri-M members coordinate times for members of Yorktown Ensembles to work with students at Arlington County Middle Schools.
  • Arlington House: Tri-M members coordinate weekend performances in the Rose Garden at Arlington House, within Arlington National Cemetery
